Notes

1970s sweater for my long term project to knit a sweater from each decade from 1890s to 1990s.

I wanted to use Elizabeth Zimmermann’s %age system for a sweater, but also wanted to use steeks. Her Kangaroo Pouch sweater from Knitting Without Tears fit the fill, including an unusual method for producing a top-down set-in sleeve.

Stitch patterns are from Barbara Walker’s 2nd Treasury. Both books were published in the early 1970s.

38’’ sweater, 5 sts and 7+ rounds/in
~1.5’’ hem, using JMCO and 3N join, rather than LTCO and sewing down.
190 sts, 95 for front and back
25 sts for neck; planning a square neck, but might see if I can come up with a shape I like better.

Completed row 18 of first repeat 15% complete.

hem and 2nd diamond repeat complete. 25%

09-03-2022

First sleeve done. 6 full diamonds down sleeve. Will put on waste yarn until 2nd sleeve is done and sweater washed and blocked, so see if I need to add any moss stitch as a cuff extender before turning the hem. Tried it on and it looks good. Sleeve is close-fitting, but nice!

Knitting complete. Soaking overnight.

Sweater currently drying on a drying rack. just need to sew down the hems and weave in a couple of ends.
