I’ve been waiting for this Holiday unKAL … this will be so much fun!

The inspiration came from a Berroco KnitBits, then discussed on the Berroco Lovers KAL Alumni chatter … both things not to miss.

A couple of years ago I made Norah Gaughan’s Snowflake in “big” yarn, which turned into a still beloved pillow. So, when Francisco came around and Myriam suggested a Holiday KAL for it, I knew what I wanted to make.

I’m also dreaming of making a Francisco in Berroco Brielle Rouille, but … one bird at a time …

11-29-2018

So I was a bad girl last night and didn’t stop after the proof-of-right-needle tail. There is really no excuse other than that this is very enjoyable to knit, even with the big yarn.

MAKE SURE TO READ THE ERRATA FOR THE SHORT ROWS … the e-pattern still has the mistake in it.

“Mr. Bird”, as Myriam suggested to name him, now measures about 14” tail to tummy, and he is about 8” tall from non-existing-feet (which I might change) to the beginning of the neck. He ate an estimated 5 oz of Poly-fil so far.

12-04-2018

Ok, I just had an idea how I can show “progress” while not showing the final project, see pics.

This bird is totally fun. If Ravelry would have a six stars scale for a pattern, I would give it seven.

Francisco in “big” yarn makes it a conversation piece. Instead of using Macro, you could also use multiple strands of another yarn, for example Ultra Wool or Vintage.

12-06-2018

I should add that I used 12mm safety eyes for the eyes (since I really had no beads big enough or black buttons in the right size).

I used double-stranded Ultra Wook in black for the face.

Also, I used only a tiny bit of yarn from the second skein. If you have only one skein, you could play yarn chicken … it might work.

12-14-2018 King Francisco

I finished the “King” in Brielle Rouille.

Needles DPN 4mm. Beak in Ultra Wool Sunflower (I think), embroidery in Ultra Wool Cast Iron.

I will say that the “King” makes a fine Christmas present (and therefore justifies the use of Brielle).

Crown: Crocheted (G/4mm) of gold metallic 1/16” trim. Chain 20, close to loop. Chain 2 (= first dc), dc, picot (ch2, sl in first ch), skip one chain, dc2. Repeat to end, slip into ch 3 to close the loop.

12-14-2018 Coco Cisco

Meet Coco Cisco, the para-Parakeet. Coco covers the other end of the yarn weight spectrum and is made of Ultra Alpaca Fine. I used the colors that I had on hand, so Coco doesn’t have the variegated wings that parakeets usually have. But … he’s happy the way he turned out, particularly since his size is actually very close to real “life size”.

DPN 2mm

Ultra Alpaca Fine in 12177 Lime Mix (body), 1294 Turquoise Mix (wings).

Skip short rows for crest.

Beak embroidered in 12180 Grove Mix. “Face” in KnitPicks Palette Semolina, split to single strand. Face marks in Ultra Wool 3332 Blue Jay, split to single strand.
