Notes

Inspired by Berroco’s Holiday email, pointing to the “snowflake” pattern by Norah Gaughan, I decided to give our sofa pillows an uplift and knit those snowflakes in a really thick yarn to achieve pillow size hexagons.

The Yarn: Naumann’s Angora, a bulky 2-ply yarn has a beautiful shine to it. I bought it at this year’s Yellow Rose Fiber Fiesta. A very heavy yarn, not suited for garments, it worked out perfectly for this home deco project!

Because snowflakes are typically not gray, I decided to make one side of the pillow in a natural wool. Since I didn’t have wool that thick, I used three strands of a fingering wool from my stash to accomplish about the same gauge as the angora yarn.

I can imagine that Berroco Noble would also work very well to achieve similar results.

Needles: 10.5 mm circular needles and a set of double points.

The Pattern: I love the pattern! So much fun to knit, and it looks much more complicated than it is. I made two modifications: I decided to knit in the rounds to eliminate the seam. To do that, just eliminate the two stitches at the ends and in every “back row” knit where purl, purl where knit. In row 25 I changed to “k2 tog, k2, ssk” to make the shaping symmetrical.
