I love Emily Dickinson, and when I saw her shawl at the Harvard Library I wanted one just like it for myself.
Here is the real Emily Dickinson shawl, now located at Harvard’s Houghton Library -

The first thing that I did was search the internet for a pattern, but all of the shawls that were named after Dickinson looked nothing like the one that she actually wore. And so began my wondrous jouney into the land of crochet…
Thanks to YouTube, I was able to figure out which stitches Emily’s cousin Loo used to make this shawl…as well as how to make the tassels and twisted cord. I used the measurements stated on the Harvard website to help me with the size.
Berroco Ultra Fine Alpaca, Turquoise Mix, was a good way to mimick the magically changing blue green color.
Obviously, as the extra folds show, the shawl that I made is a little wider than the one that Emily wore. Like I said, this has all been one big trial and error experiment. I have more yarn ordered to try for an exact copy, but the one that I made fits me and I am happy with it. :)
I had never tried to crochet before this shawl. Now, thanks to Emiliy Dickinson, her cousin, and Harvard, I have discovered a hobby that soothes my mind and body.
Thank you, Emily et al.
