Notes

I’m so excited to have recreated Emily’s shawl, right down to the proper dimensions (although I did not crochet the giant hole in the back of the original, and I used a more modern wool blend yarn). I closely studied the photo of Emily’s shawl (made by her cousin Loo Norcross) that Harvard’s Houghton Library shared, and consulted Civil War era crochet patterns for guidance. I’m so happy with how this turned out, I hope that Emily is smiling -

I made my first attempt at this shawl about 7 years ago, when I was just learning to crochet. In fact, I learned to crochet so that I could make this shawl. Here is my first attempt: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/TheOtherEllen/emily-dick...

No, I did not make a blue shawl and a green shawl. The yarn I used has magical color-changing powers and this is why I chose it. Harvard calls the shawl “blue/green”. It was described as “blue” by Thomas Wentworth Higginson after he met Emily, so this yarn made sense to me. Sadly, this yarn has been discontinued.
