Notes

This little guy is about 4” (10 cm) tall by 2” (5 cm) wide, or 2.5” (6.4 cm) through the longest axis. He is inspired by Lucy Ravenscar’s Dalek pattern, and uses some of the same techniques (fpsc for the collar area and fphdc for part of the gunstick), but is otherwise my own original pattern.

I’m not completely happy with the head shape, I’d like it to be flatter and rounder, and it needs more rows between the bottom of the collar and the top of the skirt, because there’s barely enough room to squeeze the arms in!

Both arms and the eyestalk are done in embroidery floss chosen to match the body color. The gunstick has two shortened and bent paperclips stuck inside. The base is worked separately and sewn in after stuffing, with varying circles of pale blue yarn for whatever those hover-thingies are on the bottom of flying Daleks -- I don’t know what they’re called, but I’m sure there’s a technical term somewhere. I realize old-school gray Daleks couldn’t fly, but there’s no reason not to retrofit themselves to modern standards.

All the patterns I’ve seen for other Daleks are really quite big (8” to 11”) and use bobbles for the hemispheres on the skirt. I decided to go with 7.5 mm safety eyes instead of bobbles because I wasn’t confident of my bobbling skills and preferred the way the eyes looked. It was difficult to get them to line up straight until I realized I could split the stitches and insert the eyes through the yarn instead of sticking to the gaps between stitches. The skirt panels are outlined by a single strand of embroidery floss.
