This scarf visualizes data from the time spent charging and consuming my phone battery across a period of 5 days.

Each garter ridge represents a 30-minute time interval, with 48 garter ridges representing a 24-hour time period. The number of coloured stitches across each garter ridge maps to my phone’s battery percentage at that time. (So the length of the scarf represents time, and the width represents battery percentage.) Green stitches indicate that my phone’s battery was charging, and red stitches indicate that its battery was draining.

Planning and Knitting Chart
I originally intended to cast on 26 stitches for the scarf, so I mapped my phone’s battery percentages to 26 (where 100% battery is 26 stitches and 50% battery is 13 stitches). However after creating a swatch, I wanted the scarf to be wider, so I doubled these numbers for a total of 52 stitches, and mapped out the pattern on a knitting chart in an Excel spreadsheet.

I mapped the coloured stitches representing battery percentage along the centre of the scarf for visual symmetry.

The knitting chart and battery percentage data can be found at Battery Scarf Knitting Chart. Each column in the spreadsheet represents 1 garter ridge (instead of 1 row, which would make the pattern look uneven in garter stitch).

Methods and Materials
I used 3 different yarns with different materials and weights - ideally I would’ve used the same weight, but I wanted to use up materials from my stash and avoid buying too many new skeins. I found the 5mm needles worked well, though the varying widths of green/red yarn made the edges of the scarf a bit wonky. Blocking helped even things out a bit.

This was my first time trying out colourwork so there was a bit of trial and error involved - I used intarsia knitting for the patterns, following Edie Eckman’s tutorial.

Decided to add tassels at the end with some leftover red yarn to balance things out visually - used Bold Cotton Knitting’s tutorial. Ended up having space for exactly 24 tassels on each end which felt perfect for a temporal data scarf.
