Notes

This sample shawl was made from a number of undyed Icelandic yarns then available from Jorstad Creek. Narfi is still available, but the other yarns used (Soley, Svana, and Bjarki) are not currently available - it all depends on the color of Icelandic fleece that Kerry Graber, owner of Jorstad Creek, is able to obtain from local farmers in Washington and send off to spinning mills. Kerry does have Narfi in kits dyed in various colors from light to dark that can be used to knit Brimnes.

Brimnes is one of Evelyn Clark’s Icelandic shawls and it made perfect sense to knit this sample shawl using her pattern. Evelyn has been a big supporter of Kerry and it is nice to feature her patterns with Jorstad Creek’s yarns.

I love this pattern. I had a little difficulty increasing with yarnovers on both the right side and wrong side of the pattern and keeping the Spider Band stitch pattern lined up, but I got it under control. It was fun to watch the progression from light to dark yarn. It makes a very elegant shawl.

Thanks to Jann Hoppler for the photographs and to Dawn Scurlock for being such an agreeable model.
