Notes

I have made a few totes/bags and I keep getting stuck when it comes time to make the straps because I am not a fan of either the leather straps some people sew on nor the premade color-coordinated lengths of rope that others use. I want to find an actual “pattern” or type of cord that I can use as my “go-to” for all bags/totes moving forward. All photos are captioned with which “attempt” is shown in the picture. This is where I shall record my “experiments” with different styles of cords.

Attempt #: 1
Cord Name: Romanian Cord
Source: first attempt based off of Make & Do Crew Romanian Cord from the hippie bag straps and YouTube tutorial - ended up using this video tutorial for the most part
Sample: Super Saver Solids and an H/5mm hook, worked single stranded
Notes: use a “pointier” hook and work double-stranded for a thicker cord (single-stranded seemed more fitting for a drawstring rather than a bag handle); one of the few instances when I did NOT go down several hook sizes and it still ended up being fairly tight, hence the need for the pointier hook

Attempt #: 1.2
Same as the above except J/6mm hook, double-strand

Attempt 1.3
Making the straps for the alpine bag in Romanian cord, Hue + Me double-stranded with an L/8mm hook.

Attempt #: 2.0
Cord Name: Romanian Cord
Source: first attempt based off of Make & Do Crew Romanian Cord
Yarn: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton held double stranded
Hook: H/5.0mm
Notes: “pointier” hook is a must to keep from getting stuck/tired

Attempt #: 2.1
Cord name: Romanian cord
Sample materials: Dishie worked double-stranded with an H/5mm hook
Notes/Final Thoughts: seems pretty sturdy; this was the first time using two different colored strands at the same time - it came out looking a bit messier than I would have liked but it was actually easier to work than when using only one color (it was easier to get two loops of each color than to get four of one on the hook at the same time, if that makes sense). See Romanian Cord Tassel Drawstring for more information!!

Attempt #: 2.2
Cord name: Romanian
Sample materials: single strand of 24/7 cotton with an E/3.5mm hook
Notes/Final Thoughts: produces a fairly thin cord but it seems sturdy enough; using it for a small crossbody bag strap
