Notes

I got the body knitted. Next we’ll see how tough it is to add all the bits that make it a hen.

Already looking more like a hen with just the comb done. I used 2 strands of the Omga cryl and size 00 needles. I picked up three stitches (crochet hook helped here), did kfb, k, kfb and bound off. After I wove in the ends to cover the white on the comb, I left the ends long to use below.

I used the above tutorial for the beak, using less stitches. Next time I might try embroidery floss, so I can do the exact tut. Or maybe lace weight yarn.

Using the red end, I added two French knots for the wattles. I also took a stitch between the wattles under the beak.

I added two rows to the wings.

Row 3: p, p2tog, p

Row 4: k3

I also added a tail.

Tail

Pick up 4 stitches up the center back with a 00 needle.

Row 1: k4
Row 2: c/o 1, k3
Row 3: k2, c/o 1
Row 4: c/o 1, k1
Row 5: c/o 1, pull yarn through.

At least I think that’s what I did.

I used one strand of embroidery floss for the eyes.

This may be the cutest thing ever! I can’t wait to get some good pics.

I love how this hen photographs. And now for the secret to my standing chicken. I tried unsuccessfully to add wire to the legs. The solution works even better, I think and isn’t permanent. I inserted a sewing needle, eye first, into each leg leaving about half of it sticking out. Then I stuck the needles into the veggies and the ball of yarn for perfect hen posture.

I started a second white hen tonight for Erin. I knitted through round 14.

I got the wings and tail finished on Erin’s hen. I did the comb yesterday.
