CO 120, ktbl, p1 for ribbing -- for 2.5 inches. On a previous hat, I knit the ribbing for 3 inches--which looks great--but I didn’t have enough black yarn for this hat, so I made a shorter brim.

I added stripes via helical knitting. With the blue yarn, I knitted from both sides of the skein. I also continued with the black yarn from the ribbing. That gave three working strands creating two blue stripes and one black stripe.
