This is my second test for the talented Amy van de Laar. Several years ago, I tested her beautiful “Beanstalk Cowl.” Her accessories are outstanding.
These are textured, fingerless mitts in DK weight yarn, knit in the round from the bottom up (wrist to fingers) with gusset increases on the palm side only. The leafy motifs combine a cluster stitch, two-stitch cables, and simple lace. Both charts and full written instructions are provided.
The “alternating cable cast on” is a little easier and faster to knit than a tubular cast on and looks almost the same. I found that (for me), knitting these mitts with 2 circular needles was easier than the magic loop method. I kept the palm, gusset and thumb stitches on one needle and the pattern panel stitches on the other needle. With this method, I only needed 1 marker since the cast on tail marks the BOR and the end of needle 1 is essentially the 2nd marker.
You can easily make these in a couple of days even while streaming/watching movies. Super easy and quick project for the intermediate knitter. Even a patient beginner could make these because the instructions are great.
What I’d do differently next time:
I’d use a smaller needle JUST for the cast on. I see some minor flaring at the wrist. I did my cast on rather loosely, so next time I’d snug it up a little and go down a needle size or two for the cast on.
Finished Measurements:
Palm circumference - 7.5”
Length - 8”
Weight of finished mitts: 1.2 oz (34 grams)
