I was a while completing this because I realised I’d knitted 40 rows more than my last one and still had yarn left over that I wasn’t expecting. I had the same number of stitches, same needle size, followed the same pattern and started off with the same amount of yarn!! So I assumed it must have been knit a little tighter but I still can’t understand why such a big difference in yarn used. I’d been thinking all I needed to do was knit until my yarn was used up but I still have quite a bit left over.
I left this project for weeks thinking I may have to reknit and not looking forward to undoing it. Then I decided to stitch it together (garter stitch kitchener) and see how it looked. I’d worked short rows but because of the extra rows worked I still had a hole when I came to gather the end stitches.
Not wanting either a hole or bunching/puckering at the top and bottom I made a couple of small crochet circles and attached them. This worked fine and once filled with the stuffing from old cushions it looks fine and I’m pleased with it. In fact I can’t quite believe how well it’s worked considering the difference in rows between my 2 Puff daddy projects. It is lined with lightweight cotton fabric, of a similar colour to my yarn, which I had in my fabric stash. The garter stitch kitchener makes for a completely seamless look and well worth checking out.

92 garter stitch ridges in total. My first pouff had only 71 garter stitch ridges!

Finishing today took just a couple of hours (joining, crocheting, attaching the ends, adding the lining and filling) and really should have happened before Christmas and not left for so long. Plus I now have yarn for number 3 as my son has also requested one!

So now I know what happened….it wasn’t anything to do with my gauge but to do with the yarn thickness! I’ve just started a 3rd pouff only to discover how markedly different the thickness and elasticity of the yarn I’m now using is to the thickness of the yarn in this project. See the last 2 photos. It’s exactly the same spec’d yarn from Hoooked but very different in thickness and much less elastic. This obviously means that difference in yardage will be considerable hence the extra rows and amount of yarn I have left over in this project. I never thought of checking my gauge before starting this as I was using the same type of yarn and following the same pattern as my first pouf. Another lesson learnt…I hope.
Still it’s excellent yarn for this project but I really should have twigged to that a little sooner!
