Notes

Laplace are Palazzo Pants; long, wide-legged and worn high with an elasticated waistband. Named after the mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace are these trousers with side seam cables and pockets. The remaining parts are knitted in stockinette stitch to make the cable stand out. Laplace is worked flat in four pieces for the ultimate fit and made to be worn with the Khayam jacket as a set. Why not make Laplace into culottes by making them shorter, to below the knees? Both are knitted in the Bendigo Classic 5 ply with a crepe construction.

Inside leg: 80 cm/31.5”
Crotch height: 29 cm/11.5” before waistband (4 cm/1.5”)
Full length: 113 cm/44.5” including waistband
Intended ease: 18 cm to 28 cm/7 to 11” positive ease at waist. Sample shown is 100 cm/39.25” (with elastic inserted to 80 cm/31.5”) and worn with 36 cm/14.25” positive ease on model who stands 167 cm/5’6” tall.
Sample note: Inside leg on sample is 85 cm/33.5”, full length is 121 cm/47.75” and has been adjusted in the pattern (with 5 cm/2” on inside leg and 3 cm/1.25” on crotch).

Yarn: Bendigo Woollen Mills, Classic 5 Ply (100% wool, 200 g, 580 m/634 yds).
Sample is knitted in Raffia:
4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7) balls; 2352 (2640, 2928, 3216, 3504, 3792) m/2572 (2887, 3202, 3517, 3832, 4147) yds.

Needles: 2 sets 3.75 mm/US 5 circular needle (100 cm/40”).
3.75 mm/US 5 circular needle for pockets (40 cm/16”).
2 sets 3.25 mm/US 3 circular needle (80 cm/32”) for waistband.
Adjust needle size as needed to match gauge.

Notions: Stitch markers (removable), stitch holders, cable needle and yarn needle.
1 (1, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5) m/1 (1, 1.6, 1.6, 1.6, 1.6) yds elastic 25 mm wide.

Gauge: 24 sts and 34 rows in st st using 3.75 mm/US 5 needle measures 10 cm/4” square.
16 sts in Honeycomb cable using 3.75 mm/US 5 needle measures 5.5 cm/2.25” across.

Notes: The pants are made in four parts, two for each leg, then seamed before the waistband is worked like a double hem in the round. Elastic is placed inside the hem before it is closed and bound off. A circular needle is used due to the large number of stitches.

Adjustments: Measure the full length against another pair of wide-legged trousers for fit. The inner leg length can be adjusted before you shape the crotch and deduct about 20 to 25 cm/8 to 9.75” for Culottes (mid-ankle to below the knee). The crotch length can be shortened after shaping the side with a maximum of 4.5 cm/1.75” to allow for space to shape the side to the waist. Reduce the waist by working double decreases (sssk or k3tog) instead of single decreases.
