Notes

The third sock in the UK Sock Knitters 2019 Challenge.

There are 18 groups in the periodic table and this year I will be knitting a sock to represent an element from each of them. Click the link above to follow my progress on the whole project in one notebook post!

The February Sock Represents Fluorine (F) - a highly reactive gas. Fluorine is not naturally occurring in its elemental form. It can be found in a number of minerals, the most common of which is Fluorite.

The Latin verb fluo meaning “flow” gave the mineral its name. The sock represents the colours of a fluorite crystal in a flowing lace pattern.

The inspiration picture (bottom) is a flourite crystal in gentle shades of teal and lavender.

As Fluorine is named from the Latin verb “to flow” the design is an undulating lace that wraps around the toe and short row heel.
