V for Vanadium
Vanadium was named after the goddess of beauty and fertility - Vanadis (AKA Freyja) because of the many beautifully colored chemical compounds it produces.
When oxidised Vanadium has four distinct colours - yellow, green, blue and purple. The yarn represents the silver transition metal and its four oxidized states.

FLow
Fluorine is a highly reactive gas, and is not naturally occuring in its elemental form. It can be found in a number of minerals, the most common of which is Fluorite.
The Latin verb fluo meaning “flow” gave the mineral its name. The sock represents the colours of a fluorite crystal in a flowing lace pattern.

Nickeline is a mineral compound of Nickel and Arsenic. It has a copper like lustre , with a greenish gold hue.
The word Nickel comes rom the German word for “Goblin” - with the element being named for “Nicklaus” the tricky spirit believed to be responsible for taking the valuable copper and replacing it with a relatively useless ore.
As Nickeline has a Hexaganol Crystaline structure, the stitch pattern takes inspiration from this.

LiFE on Mars
The element for this design is Iron (FE) the surface of Mars is comprised of Iron Oxide.
I asked Lottieknits to create a turquoise based yarn with flashes of orange and hot pink based on Bowie’s iconic look in the Life on Mars video. The resulting colourway is “Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads”
The pattern features twisted stitches, that wander in both straight and zig zag patterns.

The design features star stitch bands to represent lights twinkling in the night sky.

IRis
Iridium is named after the Greek goddess Iris (personification of the rainbow) because of the striking and diverse colors of its salts.
These simple toe-up shorties are a great use of leftover yarns.
In June 2019 I started Physiotherapy twice weekly so my design time went out of the window. This project will be resumed at some point in the future as it was so much fun! I rounded off the 12 pairs challenge with simple vanilla socks which you can see HERE
