Corrections, from other ravelers:

  1. Should be YO on first row before the last K3 (voodookatie, pdsknits).
  2. The chart also needs to be mirrored (voodookatie) - after the central stitch and yarn-over, knit the chart “back” (from left to right), replacing left-leaning decreases with right-leaning ones as appropriate. It actually means that the central repeats stay exactly the same, only the a-symmetrical edges are mirrored.
  3. pdsknits: Chart 3-line 27 change 8th stitch from k2tog to k1
  4. voodookatie: Chart 3, row 27, I did a k1 and a YO before the slip 2, k1, psso since there’s something a bit wonky with that row.

My notes:
The English translation is not great. I would like to make the shawl bigger than the 132 cm the author cites. The bigger needle size - 3.5 mm instead of 2.5 mm - should help some. Maybe I will have to repeat a portion of chart 1 and then chart 2 to make the shawl bigger. Will try to figure it out. I have 4 balls of KnitPicks Palette, so it should give me some leeway in sizing. Chart 1 matches the pattern on the Meret, and it’s the same colour, so if the shawl is a success, grandma will have a matching set. :-)

2012/02/14: So I decided to try and make the shawl bigger.

Chart 1 repeats are 10 sts long; Chart 2 repeats are 12 sts long. After the normal Chart 1 is done, (plus 4 rows of stockinette), the charts line up - more or less. Actually, they line up exactly in the middle.

Therefore, if I want to increase, but still keep the charts lined-up around the center, I need to add one full repeat (of Chart 2) on each side.

The increases are worked by 2 sts (in each shawl half around the center stitch) every pattern row. Therefore I need 24 sts => 12 pattern rows of Chart 1, or multiples thereof.

This is perfect, since every 4 pattern rows give me a full “leaf” (vertical repeat) of Chart 1.

For now I’ve decided to make 12 more pattern rows of Chart 1 (i.e. 24 rows in all). I’ll probably do 4 rows stockinette after that, like in the original, and will start Chart 2.

2012/02/15: So I completed the extra 24 rows of Chart 1 and the 4 rows of stockinette between the Charts and started Chart 2. Everything lines up nicely, but I am full of doubts. Maybe I should have added 24 more rows to Chart 1? I will try to increase the Chart 2 portion too, but I didn’t even begin to recalculate how to do it, and whether it’s possible at all. Oh well, thank G-d for the life line at the end of Chart 1 portion. :-)

2012/02/23: I’m almost done with the original portion of Chart 2 - finished row 40 last night. Going to finish the original chart to row 50 then add at least 20 more rows of the same, maybe 30, before switching to chart 3.

This is going pretty slowly - I’m having shoulder and neck pain lately, so can’t blithely knit for hours and hours like I did with Haruni. :-(

2012/02/26: Decided to add 30 rows in Chart 2 section.

Here’s the rub: Chart 3 requires a (multiple of 10) + 7 sts. Repeating Chart 2 is not a problem - every repetition adds 10 sts. It’s Chart 1 that is giving me grief: I made it 24 rows longer, i.e. added 24 sts, which threw the count off. It used to be 10 times n + 7. Now it’s 10 time n + 7 + 24 = 10 times (n + 3) + 1.

I am 6 sts short!!! (Or I have 4 sts too many.) I’ll have to figure out what to do about it.

Option 1: go with a different edging. Nope. :-(

Option 2: end the last lace repetition of chart 2 4 rows earlier, thus subtracting the 4 sts. Probably won’t look great. Nope. :-(

Option 3: re-chart chart 3 for 1 “extra” st instead of 7 and hope the middle “point” turns out to be pretty. Mmmm… Maybe.

Option 4: Add 6 more rows in plain stockinette between chart 2 portion and chart 3 portion. Meh. Not pretty, methinks.

Option 5 : skip the 4 rows of stockinette between charts 2 and 3, then the count will line up exactly. Not bad, but would the lace “flow” nicely from one chart into the next? I doubt it…

Option 6, current favourite: after the regular 4 rows of stockinette between chart 2 and 3:

  1. add a row of eyelets (something like: yo, k2tog), adding the usual 2 sts on both sides of each triangle
  2. purl next row
  3. do 4 more rows of stockinette.

This should bring the stitch count to (10xN + 7).

Oy. I can see lots of life lines in my near future. Wish me luck.

2012/03/06: Completed 80 rows of Chart 2 lace, then went with option 6: 4 rows stockinette, 1 row of eyelets, 1 purl row and 4 more rows of stockinette. Perfect stitch count, and didn’t even put in any life lines.
Started Chart 3.

2012/03/12: Finished knitting! I have 3 g left of the last ball of Palette - lucky me! I was getting worried toward the end that I might not have enough.
BTW, I wanted the edges to be loose (for blocking), so I changed to needle size 4.5mm (US 7) for the bind-off row.
Still have to weave in ends and block.

2012/03/13: Soaked with Eucalan and blocked. Yeepee!!! It’s not small at all! ~190cm long and 90 cm “tall” (wide?).

Made pictures while blocking. Can’t figure out how to make nice pictures of the finished product. :-( Photography is NOT my strong suit, to put it mildly.

2012/03/23: Made some pictures on my 8 year old modeling, in our backyard. The colour is not right, the colour in the blocking pictures is truer.
