Size:
Body of fish: 20 rows
Final length of fish: 5”
Made a shorter I-cord and added a toggle instead
Added fins:
- Cast on 5 stitches
- Purl
- follow rows 1-8 of the tail
- Cast off, knit wise
Eyes:
I added a knot in the bead to add some life to the eye. Otherwise, a silver or black bead made it look like a dead fish. If I find small buttons at a craft store, I might try that instead. I’m not entirely satisfied with the beads.
Yarn:
I liked the variegated yarn; it created a beautiful striped pattern than resembles fish scales in an abstract way. After making the first side, I made a second side that I wound up throwing away since the color variation turned out too monochrome. I made an effort with the third side I made to plan out more color; I made sure I could see that the green yarn would appear in the fish body.
Crochet finish:
I wasn’t crazy about how the crochet edges turned out. Because the color of the fish changed along the length of the fish, the crochet edge stands out more than I’d like it to. I think the crochet edge would work a lot better for a solid colored yarn.
Overall:
The end product is really cute, but I personally don’t enjoy how futzy projects like this get for me: ends to weave in, crochet edges, adding eyes, etc. I usually prefer just straight up knitting. All the same, it was a really clear and interesting pattern.
