Notes

The two socks were knitted at the same time with the exception of the toes. I knitted with an extra strand of Alpaca lace yarn when making the toes and heels for extra warmth and durability.

Toe
The increase round was done on each needle as follows:
* k, m1r, k to last st, m1r, k

Holding the fingering and lace yarns together, cast on 12 sts on each needle, using Judy’s Magic Cast-on

R1: knit a round (12 sts per needle)
R2: increase (14 sts per needle)
R3: increase (16 sts per needle)
R4: increase (18 sts per needle)
R5: knit
R6: increase (20 sts per needle)
R7: knit
R8: increase (22 sts per needle)
R9: knit
R10: increase (24 sts per needle)
R11&12: knit
R13: increase (26 sts per needle)
R14&15: knit
R16: increase (28 sts per needle)
R17&18: knit
R19: increase (30 sts per needle)

Break the alpaca yarn. Put all stitches on hold. Repeat to make another toe.

Instep
Put the other piece on the needles and knit the two pieces at a time.

I divided the number of stitches into two halves. The first half was on Needle 1, and was made with the Cable and Ladder pattern. The second half was on Needle 2, which was plain Stockinette for the sole.

My feet were 9” long, so I continue the insteps until the socks were 5” long from the toes.

The followings were copied and modified from Reinforced Heel Pattern.

Gusset increases
Round 1
Needle 1: Cable and Ladder pattern.
Needle 2: m1l, k to end, m1r

Round 2
Needle 1: Cable and Ladder pattern.
Needle 2: k all

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 11 more times. 24 sts increased on Needle 2.

Heel
You have now 12 gusset sts on each end of needle 2 and 30 sts in the middle. A total of 54 sts on Needle 2. While working the short rows the gusset sts are on hold.

Slip stitch pattern
Slip stitch repeat is worked flat over two sts.

Right side rows: k1, sl1 wyib
Wrong side rows: p all

Heel turn with short rows
Continue with Cable and Ladder pattern on Needle 1 until you are at the beginning of Needle 2. Add the alpaca yarn to work the following rows 1-4 on Needle 2 only.

Row 1 (RS): k 14 sts, work in slip stitch pattern until 14 sts remain, k2, turn.
Row 2 (WS): mds, p until 12 sts remain, turn.
Row 3 (RS): mds, k2, work in slip stitch pattern to 2st before double st (adjust sts so that they match the first row), k2, turn.
Row 4 (WS): mds, p to double st, turn.

Repeat rows 3 & 4 until the last row you worked was mds, k2, work 6 sts in slip stitch pattern, k2. Do not turn your work.

On Needle 2 you should now have 12 gusset sts, 10 double sts, 10 sts on the right needle and 10 double sts and 12 gusset sts on the left needle.

Reinforced heel flap
K to last double sts, ssk, turn (k together through the back loop the last double sts with the first gusset st on hold.) Please note that double sts are knitted and purled through both legs.

Row 1 (WS): sl1, p to last double st, p2tog, turn
Row 2 (RS): sl1, k1, work in slip stitch pattern to 1 st before slipped st, k1, ssk, turn
Row 3 (WS): sl1, p to slipped st, p2tog, turn

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have one gusset st left at each end of the Needle 2 (a total of 32 sts left on Needle 2).

Round 3 (RS): sl1, k1, work in slip stitch pattern to 1st before slipped st, k1, ssk, continue working in the round and k all sts on Needle 1, k2tog the first two sts on Needle 2, k to end of Needle 2.

You should have a total of 60 sts (30 sts on each needle).

The heel is now finished. Continue working in the round.

--- end copying from Reinforced Heel Pattern ---

Cuff
The following was copied from my Leyburn socks.
Next round: k8, k2tog; repeat from to end. (reduce 6 sts, 54 sts in total)
Next round: K1, p1; repeat from to end.

Repeat until desired cuff length.

EZ sewn cast-off:

Break off your yarn to a length about three times as long as the knitting, and thread it on a tapestry needle.

  1. Draw the yarn through the first two stitches as if you are going to p2tog. Leave them on the needle.
  2. Draw the yarn through the first stitch as if to knit, and remove that stitch from the needle.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the end.
