Notes

Updated Goal:
Use the entire 2 cakes of Plum for this shawl.
Notes of interest: pattern of shawl states 125g needed, so the plan is to nix edging/border chart repeats due to gauge and needle adjustments. This way I will have more yardage available for the body chart rows.

Inside Story:
In 2015, my BFF was a groomsman for one of his closest pals. Because I had already agreed to work a Craft Festival, both SlytherBun and I could not go to the wedding. At the last minute, a hurricane canceled the festival, and my daughter and I were luckily able to attend the already full wedding. The bride’s favorite color is purple. She and her husband live in Maryland where this yarn is ideal for their climate. The biggest stipulation for her: the shawl must be a stole/rectangular. I have been searching for the perfect pattern and it dawned on me that this one by Ann so fits the bride. The photo below is from the wedding. My daughter is wearing a poncho I made out of my husband’s first handspun out of fiber given to him by our daughter’s godmother. Since the couple both are from farm families, we were complimented through the night by various family members.

Charms OWL proposed. Plan is to work the edge/border first, then weigh that amount to determine how much yardage to leave after working the body.

July 6, 2017

I worked 10 repeats of the edge before bindoff = 21g. I have an estimated 42g set for the body. I am averaging 2.25 grams per body repeat, so an estimated 19.5 repeats will be done to ensure I have enough for the bind off. If the shawl’s half portion is too short for my taste, I plan on adding another 25 to 30 grams of contrasting yarn in the middle of the shawl as a sort of “backbone” to add length.

Proposing a Detention OWL of Neckwarmers for Winter 2018.

May 17, 2018

During a wedding weekend where the recipient of this shawl would be, I shyly showed her what I was worried about: the shade of purple. She actually loved the colorway and has given her blessing.

I added 1 more set of rows to make the total 5. The amount of yarn left is 52g, which leaves 10 more grams to the halfway point. I calculated the unblocked (slightly stretched) shawl would measure 42 inches across without the extra skein, so now I will definitely add the yarn to lengthen this shawl.

I found the yarn I originally wanted to use!!

Because the gift recipient would prefer a single color shawl instead of the current one being made, I decided to cast on with the original yarn I had in mind.

Charms Fall 2018 OWL proposed.

October 31, 2018

Hit my 50% mark today and posted it accordingly! I knit the edge chart set 5 times instead of the required number. I had used 19 body chart repeats. To make the 19th chart set stand out as the center, I inserted the beads in each of the diamonds. Since the second skein/cake is slightly less than the first, I will forge ahead with 18 body chart repeats along with the 5 edge chart sets.

Proposed Detention OWL for Winter 2019 term

January 5th, 2019

Oh dear. In two (OMB… 2) weeks the shawl’s recipient will be here instead of visiting next month. I need to finish knitting BFF’s sweater pieces and get cracking on this shawl.
