Notes

My youngest wanted a hat for his teacher’s birthday but didn’t tell me until the day before. On my first try, with different yarn (Bernat Denimstyle), I didn’t like how it was turning out due to the cotton content and yarn weight it was stitching up too stiff and tight, and when I upped my hook size, the hat just got ridiculously big and I was too tired to adjust stitch counts to accommodate.
Tried this yarn from A.C. Moore, selecting it partly due to its softness, but also thought the auto-striping would be a nice addition to an otherwise plain hat. I still didn’t like how tight the band was when I did the slipstitch as indicated in the pattern, so instead I did foundation single crochet (fsc) and then did rounds of bpsc (back post single crochet) until I reached the indicated length. I followed the rest of the pattern as written for the Small Adult. The result was a stretchier band (those still plenty stiff to keep it’s shape), and a much drapier fabric.
