Notes

All dye lot 79 are recaked. Stripe w them in collar, stripes, cuffs and pick up along collar/front/bottom.

make it 65cm long
65cm - 17.5cm (bottom band, same as width of collar) - neck to underarm = xcm
Cream body is to be 48cm long, so 106 rows
st st. Row count to underarm is 47.
row gauge is 22 rows/10cm

gauge
yarn A gauge (st st section) 5mm needle - 17sts in st st; yarn B gauge (garter section) is 19sts in st st
use difft size needles i guess if using just one yarn

swatch 1 - 5mm needles, unblocked 18sts/10cm
blocked 17sts/10cm

front shaping
pick up sts and knit 1 row as per pattern on smaller needle.
on next RS row and all as one row - knit 50sts on 4.5mm needle, knit 20sts on 5mm needle, k to end of row on 4.5mm needle. maintain sts on same size needle as you work back and forth in garter st.

sleeve

  • worked flat (bc i don’t like the jogs in stripes and my gauge is difft in the round).
  • 52 sts (2 more than in pattern. can’t remember how i got the extra 2, by kfb in first and last st of sleeve perhaps??); decrease to 40 (2 more than pattern). first decr on 20th row as per pattern, then every 14th or 16th row (not 15th bc not working in the round). seam, catching first and last live sts.
  • 38 live sts to cast off with cuffs.

sleeve striping - work at same time as sleeve shaping
- k 7 rows in cream, k rest of the sleeve in brindle.

cuffs
- provisional cast on 20sts, work as per garter part for 75 rows (37 ridges plus one row). 3-needle bind off.

31 may 15 - finally sewed in second pocket lining!
2 apr - grafted corners, buttons sewn on :) ends all woven in, just pocket linings to whipstitch down.
28 mar - a dash of pomfret to seam the pale section of sleeve. Borgs Vävgarner for the rest of the sleeve. cast off onto the cuffs! that’s the knitting done!
25 mar - finished second sleeve. both have 7 rows beyond 5th decr. will do final decreases as part of bind off onto cuff. have put whole thing into the wash. some of the beach, i think, had been stored with some really strongly perfumed soap or the like and it stank! hope that the wash will get rid of it. and establish sleeve length.
24 mar - 4th decrease done
23 mar - sleeve 2, 3rd decrease done
22 mar - aaargh, these sleeves! sleeve 1 - knitted 6 lots of decreases on the 20th and then every 16th row and the sleeve is tooo long. and it’s pretty narrow. i was going to rip all the way back and do the decreases every 14th row but that would make for an even narrower sleeve. have frogged back to just past the 5th decrease and will just do the 6th decrease on the 6th or 8th row. sleeve 2 - have knitted 2nd decr row (as per other sleeve, first decr at 20, subsequent decreases at 16)
21 mar 15 - have been totally putting this off bc my striping plans just weren’t sitting right w me. change of mind to plain dark sleeves. my hesitance was that it was just all getting too much, too much of everything, everywhere. so, k 4 rows sleeve in cream, switch to brindle. get darsted things done!!
18 oct - started first sleeve decreases and and then striping. have knit 7 single row stripe pairs. will need to try on tomorrow morning in better light and when i’m not exhausted to judge!
5 oct - oh dear, bad bathroom shots in my pjs. cuffs are done, just need to fill in the sleeves.
4 oct - soaked and blocked cuffs earlier in the day. Warm weather and good breeze, they were ready to work on by the afternoon. Had planned to graft them but, um, couldn’t be assed so did 3-needle bind off instead which actually gave a nice seam that will match up w the sleeve seam. So now, to work out the sleeve proportions.

2 oct - finished cuffs. K 37 ridges plus one row. Will the grating row make for 38 ridges?
1 oct 14 - finished body. did 8 buttonholes, 4 sts from bottom, 8 from top in order to make them evenly spaced. 4 st buttonholes, 11 sts bw each. cast on for cuffs two at a time, knit 19 ridges.
28 sep - oops, picked it up again. good though bv what i thought would be 14 cms was only 12 so i knit another 8 rows. 111 sts bw markers. /6=18.5, /7=15.8, /8=13.8. how many buttons do i want to have on the cardi? i have 9 to work with.
3 sep - 23 garter ridges done on right front. judging by blocked garter st sections, need about 26 ridges. hmm, to block now or just knit 26 …? and time to buy buttons! not clegs, checked there yesterday. there were some at spotlight although with their button sale they may be sold out or not enough left by now. button shop?
2 sep - have knit 16 ridges on right front, am estimating will need 24. must take an updated photo and wet block fronts eventually.
31 aug - knit 8 garter st ridges plus one row for left front (in order to be working on a ws row). used first three sts as basis for icord. worked 2 unattached rows before starting i cord bind off. when there were only three sts left to bind off (so 3 sts on right needle for icord, 3 sts of edging on front) worked one unattached row of icord and will graft together w kitchener st (counts for another row). started knitting right front w same needle arrangement.
25 aug - left front is to be 4cm wide, that’s 8 garter st ridges. am going to try knitting with 4.5mm and 5mm needles in same row, with 5mm needles where a little more room is needed for the bust. we’ll see how that goes … also plan to do cuffs in same manner as bottom band, 10cm width, so 14sts + 6 for edging
24 aug - wet blocked, drying now. Need to work out what shaping, if any, to put into the fronts …
21 aug - fit consultation w di. Really need to get some 4.5mm needles w v long cord.
19 aug - knit pocket linings, ended up doing 40 rows. picked up 53 sts along right front.
18 aug - cast off body/bottom garter band. garter band, less edge sts is 30 sts wide. at 19sts/10cm that’s about 15cm; stocking st gauge is 23 rows/10cm so need to knit pocket depth of approx 34 rows.
17 aug - k 12 more rows in stripe sequence. made increases on last row of 7th brown stripe. added 4 garter ridges to bottom. worked on sleeves, 33 rows each in cream. will put them on hold pending how much brindle i have left after knitting the fronts.
16 aug - decreases all done and finished 136 rows of garter st for the bottom. last row knitted was with a not-79 ball. might block and measure again but i think i need to knit 12 more rows on the body before attaching the bottom garter st band.
14 aug - on advice from di, ripped back to 12 rows before stripes began, which is great bc even less cream. start striping from here, again 3/3. start decreases after 12 rows, work as before. so 7 pairs of stripes altogether? have worked 2 pairs of stripes, will decrease on next stripe.
13 aug - have done 46 ridges of the bottom. striping w lot 79 and other balls.
12 aug - all decreases done. after much umming and aahing decided to start decreasing during third dark stripe. five pairs of dark and light stripe done, one pair to go but am unsure about length (still). will block and check tomorrow.
9 aug - decided on 3x3 stripes. have done 6 so far (18 rows)
8 aug - commenced horizontal striping 26 rows below underarm. stripe used 3.5 grams of yarn. is it 2x2 striping? doesn’t seem thick enough …
7 aug - second set of increases done. Body increases done, two balls used. Cast on for underarms, have knit 18-odd rows of the body. stopped there bc should perhaps have started striping already. wet blocked work so far to get better idea of row gauge in order to estimate length and where to start striping (have perhaps knit too far already?) need to know row gauge in st st and depth of garter collar as that will be same depth in bottom band.
6 aug - all shoulder increases done. First set of sleeve increases done. Second set of sleeve/body increases - 3 done out of 5.
5 aug - knit collar, striping w dyelot 79 and 53
