This hat was designed in memory of my dear mamaw (grandmother) who passed away in December of 2025. She taught me how to crochet when I was a hyper child, to keep me busy and out of her hair, and years later I am still doing fiber arts. She loved pink and loved patchwork quilts. I designed this hat to be fun and well… groovy. It features both a 2X2 and a 1X1 twisted rib into a groovy stitch pattern for the body. This hat is super comfy and stretchy and fits snug to your head and…. Is reversible! Pictured using Malabrigo Sock yarn, “Impressionist Sky”

This hat was the first color-work pattern that I designed. I couldn’t decide what to name the pattern, so I hadn’t written up the pattern. I took the sample hat to Friends & Fiberworks in Candler, NC, and asked the ladies, who I sit and knit with often, what I should name it, and they all suggested Winter Lights. (Thanks again ladies!!)

Designed with spring rain in mind as well as constantly having the song “raindrops keep falling on my head” stuck in my brain and humming it frequently.

Inspired by one of the “little winters” that coincides with the blooming of the dogwood trees (mid-late March to early April) and respectfully called “dogwood winter.” Farmers have used it as a signal for when to start planting certain crops for generations.

This project was designed for Friends & Fiberworks in Candler, NC for the 2026 NC Yarn Tour. This pattern includes Fair Isle style stranded color-work, inspired by my love for Western North Carolina—with mountains, dogwood flowers, Brown Mountain Lights, and the French Broad River.
