Japanese name: クロバーダブルフックアフガン針で編む干支「辰」
Chinese Zodiac “Dragon” made with the Clover Double-Ended Afghan Hook

Pattern is stated as “Intermediate” level.

Tools/Materials:

  • Yarn A: Clover Petits Fours 60-939 (yellow)
  • Yarn B: Clover Petits Fours 60-960 (ocher)
  • Japanese size 10 (5.1mm) double-ended Afghan crochet hook
  • Japanese size 6/0 (3.5mm) regular crochet hook
  • 2 beads for eyes
  • handcraft cotton for stuffing

Translated “Points”:

  1. Work from face to tail. See Schematic Notes below for the black star sections.
  2. For the back fins using Tunisian Simple Stitch in ocher yarn, work two plain rows, then work one fin at a time, slip stitch your way to the next fin, work the next, etc. After the final fin, use the regular crochet hook to add the single crochet/chain edge.
  3. Attach the nose (worked separately) to the dragon’s face.
  4. Stuff the dragon with handcraft cotton (Note: I may have translated incorrectly, but it would make more sense to me to stuff before step 3), and sew on the beads for eyes.

Schematic Notes:

  • These sections are worked in Tunisian Simple Stitch (one color yarn): The short row sections, the last tail section, the skinny section of the nose, and the dragon’s back fins.
  • The black star indicates where to work short rows (lower right schematic).
  • The center schematic suggests making a chain of 30 stitches at the back of the head for a lanyard.
