This Kep is made according to an original kep from Shetland, in possession of Het Fries Museum today. It was brought back from Shetland in the late 18th century, to the Netherlands. It was kept in a cabinet for display. Later it became part of the archive of Het Fries Museum.
The orginal is worked in handspun, handdyed yarn.

The pattern comes in 2 sizes. One as close to the original as I could get with yarn, size and look.
The other a bit larger knit with other colours. In this pattern, certain parts had to be omitted to make it the same size as the original.

The large kep is 50cm circumference and the small kep 44cm.
Large Kep:
Length: approx. 70cm or 27.5”, without the pompom. Circumference: 50cm or 19.6”
Needles: 2,5mm or US1.5
Yarn: Holst 100% Super Uld (100gr/574m) This kep weighs 120gr or 4.2 OZ and 700m or 765y is used in total.
white (370m),
371 Burnt Orange (red)(220m),
Denim (lichtblue)(70m),
Eclipse (navy)(130m)
Goldcrest (yellow)(70m).
I’ve chosen to omit certain patterns to make it the same length as the original.
Small Kep:
Needles: 1,5mm
Jamieson’s of Shetland Ultra (25gr/195m)
527 Lava (red),
730 Dark Navy Ultra (dark blue),
104 Natural White
Jamieson & Smith 2ply jumper weight (25gr/115m): FC 47 (blue),
Jamieson & Smith Heritage (25gr/110m) : Auld Gold
I’ve chosen these colours and yarns because it is the closest I could get to the original.
