Combining fine and heavy thread, model made of size 30 and size 10. If you wish to make the heavy part in color, many of the bedspread type threads, will work out nice.

A doily in 16 rounds made with 2 different sizes of thread features:
center flower petal of size 10 thread surrounded with
bar and mesh size 30 thread which in turn is followed by
filet points adorned with size 10 thread filled edges and filled rings/
Next, size 30 chains with picots followed by filet points and again with Irish crochet style edges, picot crowns and rings.
