Don’t you just love it when you stumble upon something unexpectedly and you end up truly appreciating its beauty and value …. and falling in love with it??

That’s the story behind the catchy “mock lace” stitch used in this dishcloth or washcloth. Some years ago I saw it being used in a sweater in a store, but I wasn’t sure how it was being created. A few weeks later I was using a bubble-type stitch to design a golf headcover, and I noticed the reverse side of the bubble stitch….was similar to the mystery stitch! Talk about fate!

While I love the lacey look….you may like the reverse of the stitch pattern: rectangles surrounded with the main color. Not a problem …. the design is fully reversible.

Here’s one additional feature of the design that makes it uniquely reversible: the side edge stitches are worked in a neat, tidy 2 color stripe so there is no noticeable distraction where the yarns are carried up the side as often occurs with striping.

As a result, there’s no need to use crochet techniques to trim the edges: just bind off and you’re done!

I’ve listed 2 of my favorite yarn options: I think Dishie seems stronger and might work best for a “dish” cloth. And because it’s softer, “I Love This Cotton!” might work best for a “wash/body“ cloth.
