Comments from Phretys:

The directions for joining the handles are a little hard to understand, even by my mother who is fluent in Japanese and used to crochet. Basically, before stitching upwards in each direction, you remove the hook from the loop, pull the loop through a stitch on the back side (inside) of the bag, and then proceed as directed. It’s not clear which stitch to loop around, so I just looped around the base of a rib stitch. Anywhere lower and your edge will curl out.

Note: entire bag crocheted with two strands held together.
