Just in time for Pi Day—wait. Oh no.

Not in time for Pi Day, 3.14 is a hooded cape based on the pi shawl shaping formula! If you like knitting shawls but don’t really need another, or don’t wear them much, this could be a good alternative project.

3.14 features eyelet details and a generous shaped hood. It’s knit both flat and in the round. The closures used in the sample are detached buttons, but you could also sew a permanent clasp or button at the neckline if you preferred.

Materials:

  • About 525-600 yards of bulky yarn; sample shown in 390 yards of Redheart Gemstone in Ametrine and Amethyst, and 135 yards of O Wool Classic Worsted in Evergreen
  • 1 24” circular needle in US9-10/5.5-6mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • Tapestry needle
  • Buttons sized to suit eyelets—24mm or ⅞-1”

Gauge:
Gauge is 16 sts and 19 rows over 4”/10cm in stockinette, worked flat and blocked.

Measurements
One size in heavy aran yarn! The cape measures about 18”/46cm deep at the center back, and 39”/1m across what would be the shawl wingspan. The hood is about 11”/28cm tall and measures 12”/30cm deep from front to back.

Oh! I lost this part when I lost my original notes, but:
All these yarns are from pretty deep stash and are discontinued! If you have any good substitution ideas, especially yarns with a color effect similar to the central yarns, please absolutely feel free to mention them in the comments—then, eventually, ideally, we’ll all be able to consult those for a good list of ideas. Thanks in advance!
