This is a great practice project for the beginning knitter. Casting on, garter stitch, stockinette stitch, increasing, decreasing, casting off, and pattern reading, are all involved here. So. You’re fresh from your second knitting lesson, and you’re itching to try out all the cool techniques you’ve just learned. This is the pattern that’ll put all that talent to work. It’s also a great “easy-but-not-mindless” pattern for more experienced knitters.
AND it’s a one-ball project! What’s not to love?

Extra tools you will need: tapestry needle for weaving in ends; scissors for trimming ends off after they’ve been woven in.
