From the pattern:

Without a mane, the puppet is a lioness; knitted to smaller dimensions, a cub… Each knitted piece can be stuffed and sewn closed to make a pint-sized, huggable companion. Filled with dry beans it becomes a toss toy. If the puppet or stuffed toy is for a baby, felt circles are wise, safe substitutes for button eyes, which could be swallowed. Felt eyes are also preferred if the knitter wishes to make a lion bath mitt from cotton yarn.
