A Purse by A Lady

A Purse

by A Lady

This pattern is from The Workwoman’s Guide, by an anonymous (referred to as “A Lady”), published in 1838. It is featured at the top of page 267, in the section On Knitting. The pattern has two alternate gauges, to allow the use of either a “fine” or a “coarse” silk twist. The size of the bag, needles size and exact gauge are not described, as is the case with most contemporary knitting patterns. It comes out as a sort of Miser’s Purse, and is knit in Raised French Stitch.
