Portland is the City of Roses, and these photos were taken in the central garden of Ladd’s Addition, famous for its roses. The neighborhood, a landmark of architectural planning dating from the early part of the twentieth century, departs from the grid of surrounding city streets, setting Ladd’s Addition apart in more ways than one.

This shawl captures the flavor of the neighborhood with its strong diagonals, roundabout gardens, and craftsman elegance. The crescent-shaped, bottom-up structure consists of a lace border, a center that is short rowed in pattern, and a graceful, beaded rosebud edging at top. Beads are placed with the add-as-you-go crochet hook method.

Bead requirements: 460 seed beads, size 5/0 or equivalent.
