There is often a beautiful ball or skein of hand-dyed gradient yarn languishing in our stash, quietly waiting for a pattern that will use every last drop of gorgeousness. This pattern was written for that very loved but lonely skein.
But please don’t let that sentence stop you from making this shawl in a heavenly kettle dyed or semi-solid luxury yarn. Those yarns will also produce a noteworthy piece.

This is a very simple pattern that allows the beauty of a hand-dyed gradient yarn, or a subtly variegated kettle dyed yarn to shine.
It also provides a touch of lace for grace. The pattern is easily adapted to various yarn meterages and is also a good starting point for anyone new to lace knitting. However, do beware! Lace is an intoxicating pastime and once you start lace knitting it is very hard to put it down and knit anything else.

The shawl is knit sideways from the tip, across several bands of pretty lace flowers and a starry mesh, to a very deep and wide lace border, producing a triangular shawl or scarf that sits well on the shoulders. It is a very simple recipe for using every last gram.

The pattern requires a lace weight yarn, typically ~800m/100g. Some laces are sold as 50g skeins such as Malabrigo and Manos. These yarns will require 2 skeins to make the shawl large enough to sit comfortably on the shoulders.
