The name Aava means open in Finnish, most commonly used to describe the open sea. The Aava pullover is my modern interpretation of the classic, off-white fisherman sweaters.

Aava pullover is knitted flat in pieces and seamed together using the mattress stitch. The neckband is picked up from the body and knitted in the round. The front of the body has an intricate cable and bobble design, that might be a bit tricky as you have to work the traveling twisted stitches also from the WS, but the final result is well worth the effort. The back is worked in moss stitch with only simple columns of cables on each side. The sleeves are knitted flat in moss stitch and the top of the sleeves are worked in two contrasting colors using the log cabin technique for a modern look and a good fit. An option for using just the main color for the whole sleeve is also provided, if you don’t want to make the log cabin sleeve caps.

The pullover is knitted with two strands of fingering weight yarn held double, but the yarn can be substituted for one strand of DK or light worsted weight yarn.
