The pattern is the same for all sizes of the hat. Changing
the yarn, needle size and gauge used will create the different
sizes.

The three sizes are:

Small 53 cm (21 in)

Medium 58 cm (23 in)

Large 64 cm (25 in)

Needles

Small 3.5 mm (US size 4) and 3.75 mm (US 5)

Medium 4 mm (US size 6) and 4.5 mm (US size 7)

Large 4.5 mm (US size 7) and 5 mm (US size 8)

Yarns

Small 175 m (190 yd) of DK or heavy DK weight yarn

Medium 200 m (220 yd) of worsted weight yarn

Large 250 m (275 yd) of worsted or aran weight yarn

Gauge

Small 22 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm (4 in)

Medium 20 sts and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 in)

Large 18 sts and 26 rows to 10 cm (4 in)

The headband is begun with a provisional cast-on and is knitted flat. It is then joined together by either using 3-needle bind off or grating the ends together.

Stitches are picked up around one edge of the headband, and an inner band of Twisted Stitch Ribbing is created.

Once the ribbing is worked to the inner width of the headband the stitches are then pulled through the other edge of the headband, and are ready to be worked for the top of the hat. The top of the hat is worked in the Eye of Partridge pattern, incorporating decreases for shaping into the pattern.
