A rectangle is cast on and worked in garter stitch until it is almost long enough to wrap around wearer’s head - you will want it tight enough to stay on skating or skiing - then joined in a circle. The crown stitches are picked up from one of the long edges and knit in the round.

You can wear it pulled back and slouchy or fold the bottom up twice (total of three layers over the ears) for a night watch cap!

Opal and Trekking make self-striping yarns, as well as solids, and their stripes will run vertically on the brim/rib and horizontally on the head/crown.
