Adults' Vest Round Neck

US 5 - 3.75 mm

Measurements:

Bust (32-34) (36-38) (40-42) (44-46) (48-50) (52-54) inches

Yarn Needed: (6) (7) (7) (8) (8) (9) balls 50g each.

Needles: US size 3 and Us size 5 needles. Also 2 stitch holders.

Tension: 24 sts and 32 rows= 4 ins with US 5 needles in stocking stitch.

Pattern:

Back- With US 3 needles cast on 105 (117, 129, 141, 151, 163) sts.

1st row: (right side)*** K1, P1,K1. Repeat from to end of row.
2nd row: P1. K1,P1. Repeat from to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows for 3 ins, ending on a 2nd row and increasing 10sts evenly across last row. 115(127, 139, 151, 161, 173) sts on needle.

Change to US 5 needles and proceed in stocking st until work from beginning measures 15.5(15.75, 16, 16.25, 17, 17.5)ins ending with right side facing for next row.***

To shape armholes- Cast off 8(10, 12, 14, 16, 18) sts beginning next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st each end of needle on next and following alternate(knit) rows until 85(89, 91, 95, 97, 101) sts are left on needle.
Continue even until work measures 24(24.5, 25, 25.5, 26.5, 27.5)ins ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape shoulders- Cast off 8(8, 8, 9, 9, 9) sts beginning next 4 rows, then 7(8, 8, 8, 9, 10)sts beginning following rows. Leave remaining 39(41,43,43, 43, 45) sts. on stitch holder.

Front:

Work from *** to *** as given for the back of the vest.

To Shape armholes- Cast off 8(10,12,14,16,18)sts beginning next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st each end of needle on next and following
6(8,11,13,15,17) alternate rows. 85(89,91,95,97,101)sts on needle.

Continue even until work measures 19.5(19.75, 20, 20.25, 21, 22)ins ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape neck- Next row: K33(34,34,36,37,38)sts (creating neck edge)
Turn. Leave remaining sts on spare needle. or stitch holder. Purl 1 row.

Decrease 1 st at neck edge on next and following alternate rows to 27(29, 29, 31, 33, 3)sts on needle, then on following 4th rows to 23(24,24,26,27,28)sts on needle.

Continue even until work measures same length as back to the beginning of shoulder shaping. End with a right side row facing for the next row.

To Shape shoulders- Cast off 8(8,8,9,9,9)sts beginning next and following alternate(knit) rows. Work 1 row even. Cast off remaining 7(8,8,8,9,10) sts.

With right side of work facing slip next 19(21,23,23,23,25)sts from spare needle onto a stitch holder. Join yarn to remaining sts and knit to end of row. Purl 1 row.

Decrease 1 st at neck edge on neck and following alternate rows to 27(29,29,31,33,34)sts on needle, then on following 4th rows to 23(24,24,26,27,28)sts on needle.

Continue even until work from beginning measures same length as back to beginning of shoulder shaping ending with wrong side facing for next row.

To shape shoulder- Cast of 8 (8,8,9,9,9) sts beginning next and following alternate row. Work one row even. Cast off remaining 7 (8,8,8,9,10) sts.

Neckband

Sew right shoulder seam. With right side of work facing and US3 needles, pick up and knit 37 (39,41,43,45,49)sts down left front neck edge. Knit across 19 (21,23,23,23,25) from center front neck stitch holder. Pick up and knit 37 (39.41,43,45,49) sts up right front neck edge. Knit across 39 (41,43,43,43,45) sts across back stitch holder decreasing one stitch in center. 131 (139,147, 151,155,167) sts on needle.

Beginning on a second row, work 11 rows knit one purl one ribbing as given for back. Cast off in ribbing.

Arm bands

With right side of work facing and US3 needles, pick up and knit 119 (127,133,137,141,147)sts evenly along armhole edge. Beginning on a second row, work 11 rows knit one purl one ribbing as given for back. Cast off loosely in ribbing.

To make up

Sew side and arm band seams. Do not press.

Notes: For my vest I chose to make a stripe pattern. I used color A for 9 rows and color B for 4 rows, carrying along the colors on the side of the work as I went.
