Aerate is a light-as-air lace cowl whose clever, three-dimensional shaping gives the look of a perfectly draped shawl without the fuss of arranging and rearranging loose ends. This shaped cowl is worked in-the-round from the top-down, increasing outward radially for a larger circumference at the base. Short rows are worked intermittently to add dramatic height to the front of the cowl, giving it a distinctly asymmetrical shape that drapes beautifully. Aerate’s geometric, cascading eyelet motif dissolves fluidly into an allover mesh pattern at the hem, and a knitted lace bind-off provides a clean, elastic finished edge. This weightless accessory elegantly frames the face and neck, and provides the lightest whisper of warmth for cool evenings.

MATERIALS
435 yards (398 meters) of lace weight wool yarn
Recommended yarn is Brooklyn Tweed Vale; sample shown in color ‘Hammock’.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
One 16” and one 36” circular needle in size needed to obtain gauge
Recommended size: US 3 / 3.25 mm

GAUGE
24.5 stitches x 40 rows = 4” square in stockinette stitch after blocking
One 16-stitch repeat of Chart B measures approximately 2 ⅝” wide after blocking
Note: Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but changes to pattern gauge will impact both finished measurements and yardage required.

FINISHED DIMENSIONS
This pattern is written in one size; finished cowl measures 21” circumference at the top opening and 48” circumference at the base after blocking. Cowl measures 18 1/2” deep at center front after blocking.

DIFFICULTY
Intermediate-Advanced: Skills required for this pattern include casting on, reading charts, knitting lace, increasing and decreasing. Instructions are provided for special techniques, including the German short row method and the Knitted Lace Bind Off.
