You can knit this intriguing three-color yoke pattern with simple slip and purl stitches while using only one color per round. Inspired by the rocky coves where I live in downeast Maine, this is a classic sweater you will wear for years.

This pattern is appropriate for an intermediate knitter who is comfortable knitting in the round on circular and double point needles. The sweater is knit circularly from the neck down, transitioning from yoke increases to raglan increases near the underarms. Short rows are used in the yoke for shaping. There are optional hip increases for slight A-line. The pattern is 6 pages long and has been test knit and professionally tech edited to be clear and free of errors.

What You Need:

  • Worsted weight yarn in three colors:

  • Color A (body): 14 (16, 18) (19, 21, 23) oz/ 397 (454, 510) (539, 595, 652) g, approximately 952 (1088, 1224) (1292, 1428, 1564) yds/ 871 (995, 1119) (1181, 1306, 1430) m.

  • Color B: All sizes use less than 2 oz/ 57 g, approximately 136 yds/ 124 m.

  • Color C (welt color): All sizes use less than 2 1/4 oz/ 64 g, approximately 153 yds/ 140 m. Sample shown used Briggs and Little Regal (100% wool, 272 yds/ 248 m per 4 oz/ 113 g) in colors A = “Lilac”, B = “Fundy Fog”, C = “Natural White”.

  • Needles in two sizes:

    • Gauge size needles: Circular needles in 16 in/ 40 cm, 32 in/ 80 cm, and 40 in/ 100 cm lengths in size required to obtain gauge. I used US #5/ 3.75 mm. You may need a size or two above or below that.
    • One set of dpn in same size as above
    • Smaller than gauge size needle: Circular needle in 32 in/ 80 cm or 40 in/ 100 cm length in one US size smaller than gauge size needles.
  • Five stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends
