Ever since Nancy Bush introduced me to Estonian lace patterns, I’ve been enamored with nupp (rhymes with soup) stitches that make low-relief bobbles. For this triangular shawl, I chose a traditional Estonian leaf pattern (from Haapsalu rätt, which translates to “The Haapsalu Scarf” by Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi) that features single nupps within medallion motifs. To make the nupps, 1 stitch is increased to 5 stitches on a right-side row, then the 5 stitches are purled together on the following wrong-side row. This shawl begins with a few stitches cast on at the neck and is shaped with increases along each edge and on each side of a center panel to form a rounded bottom edge. A few rows of garter stitch form a border, and stitches are picked up around the edges for the lace edging (the Modern 14-Round Lace Edge from Knitted Lace of Estonia by Nancy Bush), which is worked in rounds.
