Alpine Mists is a fun-to-wear keyhole scarf that cinches snug like a slip knot. The lower end passes through a loop at the top, holding it securely in place and providing warmth without bulk. Its short length makes this a fast knit requiring less yarn than a traditional scarf.

This design was inspired by the lovely Drifted Pearls scarf by designer Jennifer Lang, and named for the lavender color of the distant mountains on a misty morning in my home state of Colorado.

This pattern has been test knit.

Techniques Used
Knit, purl, cast-on, bind-off, slip stitches, increase, decrease, lace, I-cord border, pleats, 3-row bobbles, seaming. Detailed instructions, diagrams, and photos are provided for all special techniques used. Charted and written directions for the lace pattern are included.

Construction:
Alpine Mists is worked flat, beginning with the scalloped lower edge and the wide lace panel. Pleats are used to narrow the stockinette body of the scarf to create the narrow loop at the top. A simple i-cord border provides a clean finish to the edges.

The body of the scarf is 10” (25cm) wide, and 36” (91cm) long when finished. The top loop is 5” (12.5cm) wide.

Yarn
This pattern was designed for a light worsted or heavy DK weight yarn with about 220 yards (200 meters) per 100 grams. Use something that feels nice against your neck and has a little drape to it, such as wool blended with alpaca, bamboo, or silk. Soft superwash wools should also work well. If you use thicker or springier yarns you might need to increase your needle size so the scarf drapes nicely. The sample shown used 285 yards (260 meters) or 130 grams of yarn.

Fingering Weight Bonus PDF
Included with the pattern is a separate PDF file adapting the pattern for use with fingering weight yarns. This version has not been test knit.
