Pattern also includes the mitts.

A foamy lace edging lifts these simple accessories from plain to pretty. Together they work up fast, use just 100-150g of aran yarn, and suit anyone from toddlers to adults.

“Simple but special” also describes the techniques used. Three tutorials are included – for the crocheted-on provisional cast-on; for adding stitches to the long edge as you go (rather than picking them up later), which improves stretch and gives faster, smoother results; and for a non-curling picot cast-off.

Measurements: Finished head circumference: 42.5 (45, 50, 52.5) cm / 17 (18, 20, 21) in
Yarn requirements: 70 (75, 81, 88) m / 76 (82, 89, 95) yards of a warm, elastic aran-weight yarn.

Rating: PG: Some strong language.
Skills used: provisional cast-on (optional – tutorial provided), working small circumference in the round, increasing, decreasing, simple lace (from chart or written instructions), picot cast-off (tutorial provided).

Notes:
Both hat and mitts are begun with the lace edging, worked sideways and grafted to form a circle. Stitches for the body are created as you go along, rather than being picked up afterwards; besides being easier, this leaves no ridge and makes for greater flexibility.
