Modular baby cardigan, smallest size used 1.5 balls of Amazing and was knitting up in a couple of evenings. Uses mitred squares, garter stitch panels and icord trim.

Optional flower embellishments and crochet buttons, though small buttons would be fine.

I chose Mauna Loa as it’s a bright shade suited to both boys or girls and is a bit different to the main stream baby wear.

If you can Knit, slip sts, Purl, pick up stitches, cast on, cast off, increase and decrease, you can knit this cardigan.

Used 2, 2, 2, 3 balls of Amazing. 1 ball of Murano Lace would make the first two to three sizes depending on your tension.

Errata: couple of corrections to stitch counts on front pieces, clarification of the picking up of stitches for the front panels, expanded descriptions and explanations thanks to suggestions from Ravellers such as GrannieAnnie and csec who were very helpful. Please make sure you have the latest version of the file.
If you can’t download that version, do let me know and I’ll send it to you.

Please note this is a BOXY, square cardigan with an oversized style, if you need a more fitted result you can do a couple of things to change the proportions.

  1. make a smaller size so the width fits your childs chest measurement, but add additional length to the bottom of the body to make a taller, slimmer version. Instructions on how to do that are included in the Kids and Adults versions, but you could just pick up the hem edge and knit extra length once the body is finished.

  2. make sure you actually add the icord edgings, particularly on the neck. If the neck is left unfinished it’ll make the cardigan too large, it was included in the pattern to draw in the neck and add stability to the fabric. If you don’t want to add an icord neck finish, then knit a ribbed collar, it’ll do the same job.
