This pattern calls for an Amazing Needle which is a bamboo crochet hook with a hole drilled on the other end with a shoe strong going thru it. You can combine both knitting and crocheting stitches in the same project.
The crochet hook acts the knitting needle creating the stitches where as the shoe string going thru the other end of the crochet hook acts as the knitting needle in your left hand that holds the stitches already made.
This sock pattern starts you off with crocheted stitches on the cuff, then your work the pattern stitch on the leg part and the foot part you create your knitting stitches. AMAZING!
