The Amboise Shawl was inspired by the Château d’Amboise (pronounced am-BWAZ), a castle in the Loire Valley in France. This castle, situated on a hill overlooking the Loire River in the city of Amboise, was a residence of the French royal family from 1434-1563 and residents included François I, Henri II, Catherine de Medici, Mary Stuart, and Leonardo da Vinci. In fact, da Vinci is thought to be buried in the chapel on the castle grounds.
The three lace motifs that make up the two large panels of the shawl are all inspired by architectural features of the exterior of the château, and the lace edging with the picot bind-off is meant to reflect the upper windows of the château. The lace is arranged in columns to create an architectural feel, mimicking the distinct lines of the towers and the support columns on either side of the windows.

Materials:
• 400-440 yards (360-400 m) of fingering weight yarn for the main color and 200 yards (180 m) of fingering weight for the contrast color. This shawl is designed as a two-color shawl, but can be knit in a single color. If knitting it in a single color, you will need 600-640 yards (548-585 m).
• US size 5 (3.75mm) needles. If using circular needles, I recommend using at least a 32 inch (82 cm) cable.
• At least 4 stitch markers
• Tapestry needle
