This is a basic sock pattern with very detailed instructions for the first time sock knitter, including a work sheet for determining the amount of stitches to cast on and other numbers you will need. This pattern will work for any size and most gauges and most yarns, but was written for a pair of medium size socks using sock weight yarn (YCA yarn weights of 1 or 2). IF YOU CHOOSE FINER YARN OR WANT TO MAKE VERY LARGE SOCKS, YOU WILL LIKELY NEED MORE YARN THAN IS INDICATED IN THE PATTERN.

I’ve been asked to clarify something in step “4. Back of the heel”, in terms of moving the stitches around:
If you have never knitted socks before, this will be helpful-- The stitches are moved around in order to begin the back of the heel. Instead of completing that last round before beginning this step, only knit pins 1 and 2. Then move them as indicated. This way, the yarn will be exactly where you need it to begin the back and forth rows for the heel. If you wait until completing the last round, then your yarn will be in the middle of the heel row and you’ll have to either pick back half of the heel stitches, or complete the row and then purl one row before beginning the two repeated heel rows.

This pattern requires a download of 4 pages in black & white, which includes a worksheet.
