Angelus is a striped crescent shaped shawl worked in garter stitch and finished with a knitted-on cabled edging. It is a great pattern for a knitter looking to dabble in simple samples of several techniques; stripes, slipped stitches, lace, cables, and intarsia. This shawl, with its architectural lines and smooth shaping, is the perfect complement to a casual fall outfit. Work it in a luxuriously soft heavy fingering or sport weight yarn for best results. Choose colours that stand out against each other and aren’t too variegated.

Yarn Requirements:

Sport weight yarn, at least 305m (335yd) for MC, and 305m (335yd) for CC. Err on the side of caution and opt for a yarn with a higher yardage. Test knitters used up to 343m (375yd) MC and 357m (390yd) CC.

The sample is worked in Malabrigo Arroyo, and used 1 skein each of colour 850 Archangel (MC), and colour 054 Escoria (CC). There was literally no yarn left upon binding off, so if you are concerned about running out of yarn, consider a sport weight with a larger yardage such as Bugga! by Cephalopod Yarns and the Verdant Gryphon, or Socks that Rock Mediumweight by Blue Moon Fibre Arts. A fingering weight yarn will result in a smaller, but still lovely, shawlette, whereas a DK weight will give you a large, cozy wrap.

Gauge:

23 sts and 44 rows (22 ridges) over 4 inches in garter stitch, unblocked. The gauge expands when the shawl is blocked to the intended dimensions. Gauge is of middling importance in this project as the finished size can vary. Aim for a cushy yet drapey fabric with good stretch.

Difficulty:

Ambitious novice.
Techniques required: garter tab cast-on, knit and purl stitches, simple cables, basic lace, basic intarsia, slipped stitches, increases, applied edging.
