Ansteorran Star Dishcloth
This dishcloth is a great project for largess, taxes, or other SCA gifts. It is also a great beginning pattern for new knitters. These work great when camping either as dish cleaning cloths or as washcloths for showering.
This knitting pattern was developed using a cross-stitch design originally created by Kateline de Lys (MKA Kay). The original Black Star cross-stitch pattern can be found here: http://www.listen-up.org/kitty/xstitch/sca.htm (direct link: http://www.listen-up.org/kitty/xstitch/patterns/star.jpg). Kateline very graciously granted me permission to use her design as a guide for this knitting project – if you intend to use the original cross-stitch as a chart instead of following the directions below, be sure to ADD 4 rows to the beginning and end of the project, and ADD 3 knit stitches to the start and end of each row to match the pattern below; this makes the star and circular border far more visible on the finished product.
Needles used: US 7 (4.5mm) straight needles
Finished size: Approx. 10” x 10” (unblocked). After use and washing, the piece will shrink and tighten, depending on your personal gauge and the yarn used. Gauge is unimportant, but use a needle that gives you a fairly tight weave, since this piece will take some abuse if being used on dishes.
Yarn: 1 skein (2.5 oz) of Sugar ‘n Cream, 4 ply 100% cotton yarn in Sungold (color #14) or a similar worsted weight, cotton yarn in “Ansteorran Gold.” Could also be worked in black.
I have triple checked the pattern for errors, but please do not hesitate to message me or ask questions if there are any issues with the pattern.
