I like trying to find ways to use old lace patterns, especially border patterns. Accessory pieces are also a great way to show them off.
The lace border pattern is worked from side to side for the shawlette, with garter stitch added to the long straight edge and worked over short-rows to give it a slight crescent shape.
The cowl is worked from side to side, then the cast-on edge is joined to the live stitches to form a circular shape.
Beads are added using a crochet hook to slip them onto the stitch before knitting it.
Finished measurements:
Shawlette: 46” (117 cm) long and 9” (23 cm) wide
Cowl: 37 1/2” (95.5 cm) circumference and 5” (12.5 cm) wide
Yarn and beads needed:
Shawlette: 250 yds (229 m), and 218 size 8/0 beads
Cowl: 130 yds (119 m), and 168 size 8/0 beads
If you substitute another yarn, make sure to use a yarn that is smooth to make adding the beads easier to do.
If you’re looking to substitute another yarn, Cascade Yarns Alpaca Lace, Valley Yarns Hatfield, The Alpaca Yarn Company Sure Elegance, Malabrigo Silkpaca and Rowan Fine Lace are suitable choices.
